It was the first time I worked with Vitaly Kischenko, and I was glad to discover that he is such a talented, smart actor. Alexey Vertkov and Vitaly Kischenko are both the type of actor who you make agreements with, meaning you give them a task and then they let the potential find its way out. When you work with such actors, the crucial thing is to make a choice. They will do all the rest themselves.
The hardest thing is to find war time characters, because at that time faces were quite different. They had more consciousness in the eyes, more expression and I think also a spiritual deepness that reflected the war time countenance that appeared in this period of the nation's dreadful strain. It was also a time when everybody was seized with an overwhelming idea of fight between Good and Evil. Such faces are rare today.

It was our conscious decision that the parts of Germans should be played by German actors only. In my mind, they have done their job very well. They could keep silent, but it was obvious they were Germans… Karl Kranzkowski was an amazing Hitler. A brilliant actor! German acting school was a real discovery for me.
